OROUA DOWNS FIXTURE. AN EXCELLENT PROGRAMME. Entries which showed a large increase in the aggregate over the number received last year, fine weather and new sections in the programme made the Oroua Downs sports, held on-Saturday, one of tho most successful fixtures staged in recent years by tho Oroua Downs Sports Club. Although pony races had been held previously, this was tho first year in which horse races were aranged, and the innovation proved well worth while. Tho entries received for this section of tho programme were 60 numerous that the competitors had to be allocated to divisions, and the races attracted much attention. In addition, there was included this year for the first time a section for bagpipe players. The Palmerston North rree Ambulance was in attendance in case ot emergencies and the presence of the Manawatu Automobile Association’s patrol otncers and the main highways inspector was appreciated by motorists. The parking or cars at the rear of the main ground was dealt with efficiently by a group of otncials, and over 300 vehicles were accommodated with expedition and in such a manner that they could be removed easily at the end of the day. The trophies were presented by the president, who congratulated the winners on their success. Mr Cameron referred to the wonderful support the club had received and mentioned that there was 71 officials assisting the club for the day. “One of the officials, Mr G. Watson, of Levin, has announced his retirement as a handicapper and starter after 50 years Service,” said Mr Cameron. “I think this is a wonderful record and. on behalf of the club, I want to thank him for the valuable services he has rendered to this and other clubs during this period of ha.f a century.” Mr Cameron then called for cheers for Mr Watson, which were heartily responded to.
