GELIGNITE EXPLODES.

WORKMEN INJURED. Pei- Press Association. INVERCARGILL, Feb. 24. _ Two men employed by the Public Works Department at Homer Tunnel, Holly ford, have been admitted to the Southland Hospital suffering from facial injuries received during blasting operations outside the tunnel yesterday morning. They are Edward Rask, a single man, aged 33, of Spey Street, Invercargill, and a married man, of Invercargill. Mr Rask and his companion were engaged at the foot of the hill outside the tunnel plugging a hole with gelignite in preparation for blasting rock. One of them was tapping the plug when the gelignite suddenly exploded in the faces of the men and knocked them over. The assistance of others working nearby was available and as soon as the injured men had been given firstaid they were brought to the Southland Hospital in the camp ambulance. No damage was caused to the tunnel, 'and the injuries to the men, although painful, and superficial. One received a cut over an eye and both have facial abrasions.
