THE NEW HAIRLINE.

CENTRE PARTINGS. People asked to give a shining example of the new hair line, says an overseas■ writer, never hesitate a moment. “The Duchess of Kent’s hair is perfect,” they say. Look at any of her portraits and you’ll sec how her-hair waves back and up. No fussy curls; a smooth, sculptured line and a centre parting which only, about, two people in a hundred can wear but which about 99 per cent will try and get away with this spring. The ‘1938 hair line is definitely on the up and up and a centre parting is news.

At a smart hat show recently, mannequins perched hats on hair done in a modern version of the old-fashioned Fraulein hair line. Fraulems did their hair over pads and cushions and kept their hats on by skewering them on to tlieir “bun” with a couple of hat pins.

A famous hairdresser s interpretation of the new hair line starts with a centre parting; demand's hair cut fairly short on the nape of the neck‘ (a semi-sliingle in fact). The hair is left long at the sides and is waved up and backwards, showing the ears, and waving softly back from the temples. The ends are turned into big flat curls, leaving the centre of the head quite sleek and smooth. Pretty ears and a good hair line are essentials. Attention will be focussed on the nape of the neck. too. This is when you’ll be paying—if you’ve never paid before—for the years when your Eton crop was levelled off by clippers; for all times when you’ve skimped on hairdressers’ bills, hoping that your long Garbo bob will hide the cheap and naety scalloping around your precious hair line.
