NAVAL ARMAMENT.
•UNITED STATES BILL. NEW YORK, Feb. 21. With the end of the hearings of the billion-dollar naval, programme approaching, the House of Representatives Naval Affairs Coommitteo expects a report on the Bill, which is virtually unchanged, within a week. Every ship combatant and auxiliary asked for by President Roosevelt will be included. It will occasion no surprise if the Bill contains several auxiliaries that Admiral Leahy recommended; also the establishment of additional naval bases, chiefly in the Pacific and at least one in Alaska. Committeemen have expressed the opinion that the passage of the Bill is more assured because of Herr Hitler’s speech. LARGE-SCALE EXERCISES. AMERICAN NAVY PLANS. WASHINGTON, Feb. 22. The Navy lias announced that the mid-March manoeuvres will cover 11,000,000 to 12,000,000 square miles in the Pacific from Hawaii to Midway Islands and from Alaska and the Aleutians to Samoa; 150 warships, 500 aeroplanes, 3600 officers, and 55,000 ratings will be involved. It is indicated that they will be the most southerly manoeuvres ever made by the American Navy, and will traverse the areas of several Japanese mandated islands. 1
