A STRONG POSITION.
PRODUCTION INCREASES. LONDON, Feb. 22. ‘Prosperity is here again,” was the keynote of speeches at the Mansion House to-day. Lord Derby, using notes prepared for Mr Chamberlain, who was absent, declared that the United Kingdom’s industrial production of 1937 exceeded that of 1929 by 25 per cent. Apart from rearmament, which was a fraction of the activity, many firms had sufficient work to keep them busy at full capacity for months. There was no doubt that ,the Unied Kingdom was in a very strong position to meet any fluctuations in world conditions. The Times sa3’s that while the domestic political situation is viewed calmly, there is a disinclination to engage in new commitments pending clarification. An absence of selling resulted in 'the stock market generally rallying.
The Mansion House is the official residence of the Lord Mayor of London (at present Sir Harry Twyford). It stands opposite the Bank of England. Designed by George Dance, the elder, it was built in 1839-53 and reconditioned in 1930-31.
