HASTY TRIP

"TO PACIFIC BASE. • AMERICAN DESTROYERS. CONJECTURE RIFE. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) Received December 22, 11.15 a.m. SAN PEDRO (California), Dec. 21. Nine destroyers have anchored off the Pacific Fleet Base after a very hasty trip under secret orders. Navy officials have refused information, while the Navy Department at Washington said it was a routine periodic manoeuvre. Some quarters have suggested that it is a preliminary to a destroyer transfer to the Hawaiian Islands. Other quarters have suggested that the navy is testing the 6peed with which the units can raise anchor and steam off.
