SERIOUS SITUATON.
BRITAIN’S ATTITUDE,
Received December 16, 10.15 a.m. LONDON, Dec. 15. _ Mr Eden (Foreign Secretary), m the House of Commons, announced today that a Note had been received from Japan apologising for the accidental” bombings of British ships and offering compensation and punishment of the offenders. He added that he was sending a reply to Japan defining Britain's attitude toward the whole series and incidents and emphasising the seriousness of the situation, and requesting a definite assurance tliat there would be no repetition. “The Japanese Government itscji realises that the incidents must impair the relations between the two countries,” the Minister added. The British Note indicates the requirements which in the Government’s judgment arise from the situation. The Japanese Note states the Government has taken immediate measures to prevent a recurrence, and will deal with those responsible on the conmletion of the investigation, and “is prepared to pay the necessaiy compensation for damage to youi country. The Imperial Government earnestly hopes the occuiTcnce of these unfortunate incidents will not impaii the traditional friendship between the two countries.”
