EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” DECEMBER 16, 1907.
Six men at “Siberia” station had shorn 1017 sheep in eight hours winch had been said to be a record. The sheep had been well-conditioned. A Wanganui man hacl been ready to stake £IOO that he would fast for 25 days. A fasting craze had overtaken Wanganui. . ' - As the result of its race meeting the Feilding Jockey Club had -paid £409 in Government taxation. Ihe total expenditure for the meeting had been £5083, which had included £3OIO for stakes. . Mr Thomas MacKenzie (later bir Thomas, Prime Minister) who had entered Parliament as an Independent had decided to join the Liberal Party. The New Zealand Government had voted £IOOO towards Shackleton’s Antarctic Expedition, which had been held up in New Zealand through, lack of funds.
The Auckland province had held the Ranfurly Shield (Rugby), cue Plunket Shield (cricket), the Brown Shield (soccer) and the New Zealand Hockey Association’s shield. The great shortage of domestic servants and farm hands had been causing great inconvenience. As ' each batch of immigrants arrived they were quickly snapped up. The Infant Life Protection Act, 1907, had come into force. It provided that in addition to the registration of births the occupier of any house in which a child was bom had to notify the registrar. . - A large demonstration had been held in London in favour of women’s suffrage.
