HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. ANNUAL - MEETING. The sixteenth annual meeting of the Palmerston North Horticultural Society was held last evening, Mr A. W. Just presiding over a good attendance. . • _ . Prior to entering upon the business of the meeting the chairman referred to the fact that during the year the society had suffered the loss by death of Mrs A. J. Graham, who, although not a.member of the committee, had rendered very great service; Mr L. A. Miles, secretary of the Chrysanthemum Club: Mr W. V. Kinsbeer, who, despite ill-health,, had had''the-inter-ests of' the society at heart'; and Mr E. Grant Sim, the lion, auditor. The meeting passed a motion of condolence with the relatives, in silence. The report (previously published in the “Standard”) was adopted. Speaking to the report, Mr Just said there was no doubt the society had worked wonders during the past- year or two, until it was now, he believed, the largest and best in the North Island. This hadTbeen in a large measure due to the keenness of the members of the committee, who showed an excellent example to other organisations in the city. The ladies, too, had supplied refreshments for exhibitors from a distance and tlie stewards. It was very satisfactory that the \\ elfaro of the society was in the keeping of a splendid team. Mr E. Whitcombe urged that the society advertise its quarterly shows more extensively; he thought, too, that the recent Daffodil Show should have been more widely advertised, as the society had adequate finances. Mr Just said that if the society could do anything to increase tlie attendances at shows without endangering the finances he would be happy to give the matter every consideration. He claimed that the best show in the North Island was being staged here, but lie was still not satisfied. Mrs A. A. Graham suggested that entry fees be reduced and prize money increased, also that endeavours be made to obtain trophies.

Mansford • vice-presidents, a large panel were’ elected;. secretary, Mr J. Galland; treasurer, Mr G. Dawiek; committee, a large committee was elected; lion, auditor, Mr D. G. Appreciation was similarly expressed of Mr Just’s courteous services as president. Reference was made by Mr Just to the fact that the venue of tlie 1939 National Flower Show had not yet been settled, though lie understood that Hawke’s Bay enthusiasts were likely to apply for the fixture. It was decided to make an application for tlie show to be held in Palmerston North. Tlie date for the Dahlia Show was fixed for February 19 and for the Chrysanthemum Show, April 30.
