TALK OF CABINET SPLIT.
GOSSIP IN LONDON. Political gossips, who predict a general election in 1938, say that there is a definite split in the Cabinet over the Hitler-Halifax conversations, says a London report. They declare that there is a serious movement afoot to reshuffle the Cabinet portfolios and that certain Cabinet Ministers think that a good deal depends on the health of the Prime Minister (Mr Chamberlain), who, it is alleged, is being steadily talked into a “decline” by the advocates of various candidates. It is suggested that the candidates who would be considered for the Premiership include Sir Thomas Inskip (Minister for Co-ordination of Defence), Sir Sa.muel Hoare (Home Secretary) and Mr Eden (Foreign Secretary). * It is said that the “pro-German phalanx” favours Sir Samuel Hoare. Although there is no tittle of evidence available to support this widespread gossip, nevertheless, it deserves to be recorded as the sort of criticism which, from time to time, is directed against the Government with a view to embarrassing it.
