DISASTER RECALLED.
REAR-ADMIRAL’S APPOINTMENT. - . -LONDON, Dec. 6. By accepting a chance invitation to a concert aboard another 6hip at Scapa Flow on July, 9,- 1917, . Rear-Admiral W. N. Custanee, who has been appointed to command the Australian Squadron, escaped one of the worst naval disasters of the Great War, when the battleship Vanguard, in which-he was- a gunnery officer and in which he served at the Battle ol Jutland, blew up. and sank, only two of the 800 aboard surviving. The explosion. occurred as Rear-Admiral Custance was waiting for the ship’s boat, in which he was to return to the Vanguard. Later, as a gunnery officer at Whale Island, Portsmouth, he was something of a terror to hundreds of junior officers who, after months of war service, were not easilv, made to toe the line in guijnery school routine.
