RACING NEWS

A GOOD RECORD. MEMORIAL STAKES WINNER GAY HUNTER’S SUCCESS. (By “Spectator.”)

Gay Hunter, who won the Memorial Stakes in solid style at Otaki, was onlytire times unplaced in 26 starts last season, when his record was six wins, seven seconds and ciftht third placing's. His last success was when ho won the Winter Oats at Napier in June. This Gisborne horse should pick up some stake money during the holidays. Southern Horseman. The southern horseman, A. C. Messervv, will accompany Sir Charles Clifford’s team to race at the Manawatu meeting.

Lustral Stays On. Lustral, after running second to Good Sun at Levin, hung on well to win the Otalci Hack Handicap on Saturday. The Tidal gelding is improving, and looks like developing into a fair stayer. Unlikely To Start. Rcipar is unlikely to race at Woodville, but is to do the Taranaki meetings in company witCi Trim, the three-year-old Laekham fdly now in W. H. Johnston’s stable at Wanganui. Plans For Amigo.

It is uncertain yet whether Amigo will go to Woodville or be kept for the Auckland mooting. The son ol Beau Pere is still suffering from a slight cough, and this has interfered somewhat with his preparation, but he is looking well. Will Do Better.

Brazen King, after making a promising showing when lie chased Tho Buzzer homeat Feilding, ran below form in tho Mcmcmorial Stakes at Otaki and better things can be expected of the Brazen gelding, who had a fairly bad passage in the race. Going To Woodville. * The Hastings two-year-oids Ivar and Kathbella aro due to make their next appearance at the Woodville meeting. Ivar, who is reported to have done well since he won the Juvenile Handicap at Napier Park, is entered on tho second day only. Both these youngsters aro by Beau Pere. For Taranaki Circuit.

It is intended that Scotland. Enge, Con Euoco, Locknit and Min Lu and a five-year-old Surveyor gelding will do their holiday racing on the Taranaki circuit. These are all in Cathro’s stables at Matamata, and are working well. This trainer is usually successful on this trip. Courtcraft Very Well. Courtcraft, who has been given steady work at Woodville since ho returned from Australia, should be at his best for the Auckland meeting, where he will have the services of the Wellington horseman, P. Atkins, who has been showing, good riding form. His capable horsemanship was a noticeable feature of the racing at Otaki. Beaten by Running.

Ilazoor looked a possibility in the big race at Otaki on Saturday when threo furlongs from home, but the torrid pace set by Gay Boy proved to be his undoing, as he had to bo riden hard six furlongs from Home to get within striking distance of the leaders, and consequently failed to finish with his customary dash in the straight. Foal Stakes Entrant.

Bcaupartir, a member of H. S. Greene’s team at Greenmeadows. will contest two-year-old events at Woodville. When this youngster ran second at Napier Park he was on the big side, but is stated to have fined down a good deal. If Bcaupartir shows the improvement expected he will bo taken to Ellerelio to contest the Great Northern Foal Stakes. First Since Winter.

Haupongi, tho Whirlwind gelding who was second to Maori Song at the Trcntham winter meeting, ran disappointingly in the Maiden Plate at Otaki, for which he was sent out a very solid favourite. He drifted in tho early stages of the race but, though ho came with a rush at the finish, he was being hard-ridden into third place. It was his first run since July, so he should improve.

Linguist at Hiccarton. A new arrival at Riccarton is Linguist, a six vear-old mare by Paper Money from Countersign, who was trained at Riccarton for some time by E. Scoullar for her owner the late Mr R. M. Grcenslade, who bred Linguist. Linguist, who won some good races for Mr E. N. Didham, father of her previous trainer, A. E. Didham, is now owned by Mrs M. V. Shiel, of Dunedin, and has joined Redolent in b. Barr’s stable.

Not Coming North. For several years the horses of Dr M. G. Louisson have been raced in the North Island during tho Christmas and Now Year holidays, but it is unlikely that such a trip will be undertaken this season. No definite plans have been made yet, but it is possible that T. Lloyd will take Invoice, Private Bunsby and tho two-year-old Improvident to tho Dunedin meeting, with Waikouaiti and Oarnaru to follow, says an exchange. Two Successive Wins. Raeecall, who has been racing well this season, and has recently added to Ins record by two very impressive wins at Feilding and Otaki, despito a 91b rise m weight after the former success, is. m great form at present, and should more than pay his way in sprint company this season He was a little unlucky to have a run of minor placings laat seiison, when his only success was in the Waiata Stakes at Feilding, last March. Martara Unplaced. Advice received in Auckland states that Martara, formerly owned by a Palmerston North sportsman and sold last February, started in the Wellington Plate, seven furlongs, at Bombay, on November 13, but was unplaced. The event, which was worth 10,000 rupees to the winner, was won by His Lordship, owned by the Maharajah of Idar, for whom L. H. Hewitt trains. Hewitt won the opening event, worth 1500 rupees, with an Arab named Chotasahib.

An Early Improver. Aurora’s Love, having her second outing over fences, shaped like an early winner in the hurdle race at Otaki. This daughter of Aurora Borealis, a winner of the Great Northern Hurdle race, has made rapid progress since her initial display at Levin, when she went the journey steadily to finish in fifth place. She was going well approaching the last fence at Otaki, but hit it hard and nearly came down, or she would have seriously troubled tho winner, Top Hat. Well-Bred Juvenile.

The Te Rapa-trained filly Calorie drew attention to her future prospects by her third to To Hero and Aivnkui- in the Rakino Handicap at the Takapuna meeting. She was badly placed early in • the contest, but came home well, and the race is likely to benefit her considerably. On the maternal side Calorie comes from a proved family, as her dam, Lady Rawson, is a half-sister to Polytheist, All Sunshine and Dark Man, all of whom were good performers in Australia a few years ago. With experience Calorie should develop into a payable proposition. RAGING FIXTURES. December 11 —Hororata R-C. December 11, 13 —Woodville District J.C. December 14 or 18 —Waipa R-C. MANAWATU RACES. SUMMER MEETING. BIG NOMINATION LIST. THREE DAYS’ EVENTS. Excellent nominations have been received by tho Manawatu Racing Club for its summer meeting, to be held at the Awnpuni racecourse on December .27, 2ft and 30, and there is every indication that on acceptance day the fields will fill well. Twenty-two horses, including tho northerners Master Briorly and King Roy, have been entered for the Manawatu Cup. Southern horses who will bo competing at tho meeting include Haughty Winner, Groat Bramble, Dictate, and. Mob Rule, while Trentham stables aro strongly represented in (ho nominations.
