MAGISTRATE’S COURT

MISCELLANEOUS CASES. Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., presided over the sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at Palmerston North yesterday. Hira Parata, a labourer, of Foxton, and William Callaghan, a labourer, of Palmerston North, were each charged with fighting in a public place, George Street, on October 31. Sergeant O’Donnell stated that at 4.30 p.m. on that day the two men became involved in an argument in George Street and adjourned to an alleywav adjoining the De Luxe Hall, where they had a fight rintil the police were informed. Each defendant was fined £l, with 21s costs in the case of Parata and 18s costs in the case of Callaghan. Oswald Leonard Saunders, a lab- 1 ourer, aged 29, and Bernard Ormond, a labourer, aged 32. were each charged with using obscene language in Broadway on December 5. Mr G. Crossley appeared for both accused. The Magistrate, commenting that it was a case in which he had power to impose imprisonment in the first instance, declined to deal with it in the absence of accused, who did not put in an appearance, and the case was adjourned for a week. John Smith, a labourer, of Ashhurst, was fined £2, with 10s costs, on a charge of being found on licensed premises after hours on November 21. Defendant was also charged with assaulting his wife at Ashhurst on December 16. Inspector Cummings staved that defendant, who had been married for 28 years, and had a family of seven children, had assaulted his wife with a chair. He had later promised to behave, but subsequently he got under the influence of liquor and as-i saulted her again. He was quite decent when sober, but became violent when he had drink. Defendanthaving taken out a prohibition order, the Magistrate adjourned the charge for three months to see how he behaved. Stated never to have possessed a warrant, of fitness- for his motor vehicle, an old model, C. F. Lyons, of Rongotea, was fined £2, with 10s costs. MATNTENANCE CASES. B. W. Dalefield, stated to be £lO in arrears on a maintenance order in favour of his wife, 'was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, his release to be conditional on the payment of the arrears. Stated to be £6 10s in arrears on a maintenance order, B. Bardebes, of Wellington, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, his release to be conditional on the payment of the arrears.
