THIRTY YEARS AGO.
“EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” DECEMBER 4, 1907. While the Manawatu Racing Club had decided to charge bookmakers a fee of £2O per day for the right to operate. at the Christmas meeting, with a charge of £5 for clerks, the Wairarapa Club _ had decided to be “more lenient, to the ring.” They had fixed the fee at £ls per day for the lawn and £7 10s for the outside enclosure, with no charge for clerks. At the Napier wool sale crossbred fleece which had brought 13£d the previous year had sold for 104 d per lb. There had been an all-round drop in values. With a view to raising money for the Palmerston North Hospital it had been docided by the Hospital Day Committee to hold a gala day on the afternoon of Christinas Day on the Sportsground. One of the novelties to be introduced had been motor-car rides round the ground at a fixed charge. Advice was received from the clergymen of the town offering no objection to the gala. Over 600 immigrants had arrived in Wellington and all had secured positions within, a day. There had still been a big demand for farm hands.
Levin ratepayers had approved of the raising of a loan of £IO,OOO for lighting the town with gas.
