PENALTY OF £25.
GAMING ACT CHARGE. Pleading guilty before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, to-dily, to a charge that, being the occupier of the Regent -Billiard Saloon in Broadway, he did keep the same as a common gaming-house, John Vickerstafl was fined £26. Detective-Sergeant Mfeiklejohn stated that at 3 p.m. on Saturday, when there were four race meetings in progress, lie visited the premises, Where he siiw defendant writing an entry on a pad. This was “2s Wynardo.” Defendant had in his left hand three slips from the pad, and attei/pted to crumple them up. Witness obtained possession of the pad and two booklets. Defendant had candidly admitted having taken 64s 6d in bets to oblige customers and said that lie had been “silver betting” for a few months. There Were fourteen men in the saloon at the time, and two of them attempted to give defendant Warning of the detective s approach. Defendant had admitted this morning that he* had been betting for two years, but had never taken any amount over 10s. Ho had not previously • been before the Court. There were quite a number or young men attending the saloon for betting, but the criminal type did not associate there. The penalty was imposed as stated.
