Questioned in the House of Lords- by the Duke of Montrose regarding the position in Trinidad the Parliamentary Under-Secretary for the Colonies said that a Royal Commission was in the process ,of writing a report and the Governor had been asked to come home to confer with Mr Ormsby-Gore, Coloilial Secretary, on the recent happenings. Altnough tension had existed in the island, the Marquis of Dutferin and Ava expressed the view that at the moment the situation \vas calm. Precautions of a temporary nature had been taken to enable both the employers and employees to adjust their, relationships in a constitutional manner. With that object in view the warship York had called at the island and, although she had now left a company of troops had arrived from Bermuda and been posted in the oilfields area. Sir Mark Young had taken over, for the moment, administration of the island and there were no signs of further disturbances. The Marquis concluded by saying that he hoped the would be available some tune in the New Year.
