FIENDISH ASSAULT.
WOMAN AND CHILD. KICKED INTO INSENSIBILITY. SYDNEY, Nov. 22. Sentencing Alick Bannerman, aged 62 years, to eight years’ imprisonment, Judge Markell described him as a fiend who behaved like a savage animal. Bannerman went to the home of Mrs Dorothy Houghton at Mosman seeking gardening work, and when she turned away he knocked her down and kicked her into insensibility. Bannerman did the same thing with her four-year-old son. ' Their lives were despaired of for three weeks. Fourteen stitches were inserted in the woman’s face, and a hundred in the son’s face, resulting in the permanent disfigurement of the child. Bannerman expressed regret. He said his only explanation was that bo was a wine-drinker and he was unable to control himself.
