PRESENTATION

RETIRING OFFICER HONOURED

At the conclusion of the annual conference of officers of the Fields Division of the Department of Agriculture held in Palmerston North last week, opportunity was taken to bid farewell to their late superintendent, Air W. J, AlcCulloch, who recently retired from the service in which he had spent some 23 years. In making a presentation of a handsome clock to Air McCulloch, his successor, Air C. J. Hamblyn, expressed the sincere regret of fellow officers that a breakdown in health had caused his retirement, but also their pleasure that a satisfactory recovery indicated that he would enjoy many years of happy freedom from the worries of his office. Since taking over his duties, continued Air Hamblyn, it had been very helpful to him to find the name of W. J. AlcCulloch so well and favourably known among members of the farming community. Alessrs T. W. Lonsdale (field’s instructor, Wanganui), J. W. Palmer (instructor, Hastings), E. M. Bates (instructor, Gisborne), A. J. Galpin (instructor, Palmerston North), A. J. Elliott (instructor, New Plymouth) and R. P. Connell (land utilisation officer) also spoke of the encouragement given to officers by Air McCulloch and of his unbounded enthusiasm. Air McCulloch, in reply, thanked the staff for the presentation and expressions of goodwill. His advice to them was to work as a team, to take the good with the bad, and to be loyal. In looking back he did not regret his association with the many good fellows met in the department. In reminiscent mood Air AlcCulloch entertained the gathering with some past experiences of transport and accommoation, etc., which were, he hoped, happily things of the past.
