WOMEN’S INSTITUTES.
BUNNYTIIORPE BRANCH. The November meeting of the Bunnytliorpe Women’s Institute proved a very pleasant function. Mrs Jackson presided and extended a welcome to two new members, Mrs Spicer and Miss S. Vix. A motion of sympathy was passed to Mrs A. Lassen in a bereavement she had suffered recently. An apology for absence was read from Mrs J. O’Donnell. A letter was also read from the secretary of the Leper Fund thanking the institute for its donation to this very deserving . cause. The president referred to the loss of one of the members, Mrs Gregg, who had left the district, and the secretary was instructed to write to her wishing her and her family every success in the future. Mrs Faulkner, one of the delegates to the recent council meeting, read a report on this, which proved most interesting reading, thanks being conveyed to Mrs Faulkner. It was decided to hold the children’s Christmas party at the Recreation Grounds, weather permitting. and a most enjoyable afternoon is anticipated by both young and old. The arrangements for the afternoon were left in the capable hands of the committee. Members were reminded to bring a small gift along for the adult bran tub. After the serving of afternoon tea, Mrs Jackson called on Mrs Simpson, the demonstrator, and a most interesting and instructive demonstration was given on crochet duchess sets. A demonstration was also given by Airs Baker on reheeling old stockings. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded these two ladies. It was a very hard task for the judge of the competition, wood pulp flowers, as there was quite an army of entries. Airs Faulkner secured first nrize and Miss B. Donald second. The best bloom comnetition was won bv Airs Leet and Airs Burrell was second.
OPIKI INSTITUTE,
Airs B. A. Norman presided at the November meeting of the Opiki Women s Institute. Visitors from Tokomaru Institute were guests and provided the demonstration and entertainment. Mrs. Norman reported on the council meeting held recently, and the usual Christmas party for the children of the district was discussed, arrangements for which are to te left in the hands of the committee. The gaidening circle decided to hold a dahlia* and autumn flower show in February, within the institute. A presentation was made to Mrs G Bond, who was recently maided Airs Norman wished Airs Bond every success. A very interesting demonstration was given on the making of flowers from scraps of velvet by Mrs Ella, of Tokomaiu. After afternoon tea, Mrs McNab of Tokomaru, organised games, which were wholeheartedly entered into. The competition for a cold sweet was won by Aliss Carson 1 and 3, Airs Webb 2. The gardening circle competitions 'resulted: Rose bl°°m. ."Y. Cooksley 1, Airs Jackson 2 Mrs Aitchison 3: floral hairband, Mrs Mebb 1, Airs Aitchison 2. Aliss Cooksley 3. The next meeting will he held a week earlier than usual, and the competition is for the test Christmas novelty made from scraps. lUo hostesses will be Mesdames Nagel and N. Mabev and Miss Matthews. The. gardening circles competitions are for six sweet peh blooms and floral gift box.-Op.k. correspondent. TIRITEA INSTITUTE. There was a fair attendance at tho November meeting of the Tiritea Women s Institute. Mrs Andrews presided and extended a welcome to several visitors, Mrs Pinfold gav a report on the council meeting. Mrs Andrews . and Miss D. Smith are tho sunshine visitors for next month. Miss McLeod gave pleasure,,with pianoforte solos. A written competition in charge of Aliss D. Smith was won by Mrs Craven, of Aokauterc. The competition for the best made and dressed doll, judged by Alesdames Craven and Christensen, was won by Mrs A. Bri l; Airs Pinfold was second and Airs Hastings third- Tho demonstrator for tho afternoon was unable to bo present. Arrangements were mado for a euchre party to take Pbfco at an early date at the residence of Mrs Andrews to raise funds for the annual children’s Christmas party. ALernoon tea was served. The competition, for December is a Christmas cake. Misses S.ilburn and Cunninghaino are the hostesses. /
