MANAWATU TROTS.

SPLENDID FIELDS ENGAGED. PERFECT TRACK CONDITIONS. For the Manawatn Trotting Club’s spring meeting the Awapuni racecourse, grounds and appointments were in beautiful order and a large number of patrons attended. There were ample indications that the light harness sport has rapidly returned to popularity at this centre, and the racing was invested with the keenest interest on account of the large number of visiting horses engaged, including teams from Auckland, Cambridge, Hawke’s Bay, Wellington and the South Island. Though there was rain early this morning, it had a freshening effect. Conditions were dull and 'warm with occasional hursts of sunshine. The track was in perfect order for trotting. . Every possible step to ensure the success of the meeting had been taken by the secretary (Mr A. H. Manson). SYLVAN SCORES. FIRST EVENT TO FAVOURITE. Sylvan, who was installed a strong favourite after the form she had shown on the West Coast (South Island) circuit, annexed the Airways Handicap in very hollow fashion and simply flew away when asked for extra effort when turning into the straight. Sylvan moved off nicely to be lying handy in fourth position passing through the straight the .first time, and steadily closed up to the pacemaker, Margaret Parrish. Five furlongs from home Sylvan quickly went to the front to open up a gap on the field. Biworthy and All Bingen, who had been in the leading division for most of the way, made attempts to close on the leader at the turn for home, but could not get up to her and she was never seriously challenged. Biworthy broke momentarily, but came on to fill second place five lengths behind the winner, with All Bingen a similar distance back. Worthy Member, who moved off well, got up for fourth place, but Margaret Parrish, who had made several mistakes, stopped quickly. Moira Bingen broke the first time round. Air Pilot was slow to get away and tailed the field all the way. ADVERSITY CONSISTENT. REMARKABLE FORM SHOWN. Adversity, who has so far not been out of a place this season, was the second successive favourite to justify the confidence of the public, taking the honours in the Broadway Handicap. Getting away smartly, Adversity was lying third behind Dark Shadow and Red. Kr.'ght all the way until they entered the back, where Harold Pointer rushed up to the front from Guy Zolock, who had made a forward move, and Adversity. Dark Shadow had shot his bolt at this stage and Harold Pointer turned into the straight with Guy Zolock, but Adversity came up fast between them and went on to open up a several lengths’ lead up the straight. Cavan Chief, however came with a very fast run into second place, three lengths behind the leader, though the latter was not hard pressed. Guy Zolock hung on for third, but Harold Pointer had not guite the condition to see out the full journey. ROPATA -SCORES. CHALLENGE HELD OFF. Ropata, who won his first race at the Manawatu meeting just over twelve months ago, and was successful at the recent Hutt meeting, proved too solid for the opposition in the run home in the Bridge Handicap. He was nearly favourite, one other horse ill the race having six more tickets. Ropata was going very nicely through the straight the first time,, and when Tan John broke along the hack Ropata went up to attend Arapai. Ropata went to the front heading for home and had enough in reserve to shake off a strong challenge by Mountain Flight up the straight. Arapai got away well to take the lead with Ropata, on the fence, and Tan John, moving up on the outside going through the straight the first time. Tail John later broke while endeavouring to hold his place in front and was pulled up along the back, where Ropata joined Arapai, with Tan John making a forward x move. When Ropata headed Arapai turning for home both Diversion and Mountain Flight moved up, but tho latter, after a struggle, could get no closer than within two and a half lengths of the winner, with Arapai holding on three lengths back. A DEAD HEAT. GREAT TUSSLE IN STRAIGHT. Going to the front early in the Luoni Memorial, Shrewdie and Trevor de Oro stopped there throughout the race to be locked together at the finishing post, the judge, who was unable to separate them, declaring a dead heat after they had had a great battle all the way up the straight. Crocus, who was a solid favourite. Inst a lot of ground at the 6tart and dsd not strike her gait till some 50 vards had been covered; she was tailing the field right to the home turn and made a late run up the straight, but could not get anywhere within striking distance and finished fourth. Going past the stand the first time, Activity bad charge from Shrewdie, Trevor de Oro, Sir Frank and Crocus with Silver Black so far behind that she was pulled up later. Shrewdie, Trevor de Oro. Activity and Sir Frank swung into the straight in that order and the first pair drew out to fight out a hard finish.
