DEBATING SOCIETY.

WATSONIA CUP CONTEST. Last evening the weekly meeting of tlie Palmerston North Debating Society was held, there being a good attendance. The evening opened with a short lecture by Mr S. G. Laurenson on “Early Manawatu,” which proved most interesting. Nominations of three speakers to meet the Lunch Club in a debate resulted in Messrs H. G. Mills, S. GLaurenson and W. M. Huntington being elected, while Mr R. Allison is the emergency speaker. Mention was made of the seven members who had competed in the oratorical section .of the Manawatu Competitions, and congratulations were extended to Mr Laurenson upon his success in gaining first place. The second portion of the evening consisted of five-minute prepared speeches by the ladies who were competing for the Watsonia Cup. Those taking part were Mrs J. S. Hornblow, Mrs K. Dean, Mrs R. Burnett, Mrs E. L. Christian, Mrs R. Allison, Miss M. R. Bird and Mrs J. A. Edwards. Mrs E. L. Christian was declared the winner of the competition by Mr L. Laurenson, who acted as adjudicator for this event, and who was accorded a very sincere vote of thanks. Tlie evening concluded with impromptu speeches upon variou's subjects.
