TRAFFIC CENSUS.
IN VICINITY OF CITY.
QUESTIONS FOR DRIVERS
Commencing at 6 n.m. on Sunday and continuing until 6 a.m. on September 5, a winter traffic census is to be conducted by local bodies and the Public Works Department on behalf of the Main Highways Board. In the vicinity of Palmerston North tally stations will be established at Ashhurst, at the junction of KairnngaBunnythorpe highway and Rangitikm Line, at Himatangi, Bunnythorpe, the intersection of the Longburn-Rongoteii highway and Foxton Line, at Sanson, and at two places on the No. 60 Main Highway between Levin and Palmerston North. At the first four mentioned points the tallies will be continuous, that is, for 24 hours per day, while at the other points the tallies will commence at 6 a.m. and cease at 10 p.in. each day. ' It will be the duty of tally clerks to record the classification of heavy traffic vehicles, and the authorities conducting the census appeal to motorists and transport drivers to slow down, particularly at busy periods and at night, while passing tally stations. In regard to the station at Bunnythorpe, a special procedure will bo adopted to assist in a decision on the question of the most suitable _ scheme for the level-crossing elimination. All vehicles will be stopped by the tally clerks at Bunnythorpe and asked to give the origin and destination of their fourney. Those who are regular users lof the Taonui-Bunn vthorpe section of the highways will he asked also whether, if the" road deviation on the western side of the railway line were put in, it would be used in preference to tb? present route. This stoppage !of traffic at Bunnythorpe will take place over about 10 hours of the day only, although the tally will be continuous.
