First indications were light clouds of smoke issuing from a gable at the southern end of the building on the frontage facing the cathedral. The actual fire, which wa6 very slight, was at the southern end of the ga.ble oil the roof, some five or six feet from the glittering, The fire brigade rushed two engines to the scene, an extentiou ladder was run up from the pavement and. after a hole two or three feet across had been hacked in the slate roof, the fire was immediately put out. No definite cause for the fire has been found, but it is believed it may have been started by a heavy spark from a nearby chimney.
