TOURING FARMERS.
LIVE STOCIC EMBARGO. “Several matters of considerable importance to New Zealand,” to’ use the words of Mr C. G. Dernier (North Island), leader of the New Zealand and South African farmers' party now touring England, are to be “looked into” during their stay in the Old Country, wrote a London correspondent on'June 30. The party relurned this week after spending a month in Europe and were entertained at a luncheon.
Mr Dormer said that the tour was somewhat unique, for it represented New Zealand and South Africa, while one of its members came from Queensland. “Actually, I think that this might be described as a Jersey breeders’ tour, for there are many of us- owning Jersey herds. It is a well-known fact that if a Jersey breeder goes on holiday ho either goes to his neighbour or to meet some other Jersey breeder. We have come Home to see the home of the Jersey and to see what the brooders in England are doing.” Mr Dermer mentioned that conditions in England and New Zealand were very different. In England dairy herds were used for dual purposes, first for milking, and then for beef, whereas in Now Zealand the animal was finished with once its milking days were over. “Some of us hope 'to look into several matters of considerable importance to New Zealand during our stay in England, for we want to tell our people when we get back just what we have seen and what is happening here. Wo want to look into the question of tho embargo on the importation of live stock into New Zealand, and we hope to inspect the quarantine station in London so that we can tell our people of tho precautions taken in England. 1 think personally that the people in New Zealand who fear the lifting of tho embargo have no great knowledge of the question, but just have a fear that it may be raised. I think it is a great mistake that New Zealand should not open her doors to tho importation of English stock. We also hope to look into the matter of the marketing of pigs.”
