OBITUARY.
AIR A. G. GUST. (From Our Own Correspondent.) RON'GOTEA, July 22. There passed away suddenly at Rongote* on Monday last another of the fast diminishing number of district pioneers in tho person of Mr A. G. Gust. Mr Gust was born in Germany in 1869. but could have known little of his native land for he was but six years old when he left with hi* parents for the sunny isles of New Zealand in 1875. The abode of his parents, was first at Wanganui, and after residing there for sonic time a move was made to Bulls, when* his education was completed. Growing to young manhood and interested in farming ho obtained a situation with Mr McKelvie on tho old Lower Rangitikei estate. Desiring to take up land on his own account he removed to Rongotca which was then known by its original name of Campbelltown. Here with his parents ho took up a section of land when the district, was first oponed up. This he retained throughout his days. At first it was all virgin hush, hut with the true spirit of a path finder this presented only a difficulty to he overcome, so Mr Gust sot to work with grit and determination and built a wliarc, felled tho bush, ploughed the ground and with tho help of his growing family brought it to its present perfection, with a fine homo and pleasant surroundings. Though not. a participant to a great extent, in pub'ic life he rendered faithful service on the Campiielltown Cemetery Board for many years and resigned only on account of failing health. Mr Gust was also a lifelong member of tile Lutheran Church, and with hi* family has played a large part-in the development of the lornl church. Shortly after Ids arrival in Rongotca Mr Gust mar-' ried Miss Charlotte Meyer, of Marton, and there were horn to them a family of. six sons and three daughters. He is survived by hit? widow, a sifter (Miss P. Gust) and six sons. Rudohvh, William, Edwin, Lenard, F-ncsf and Erie and R’ree daughters, Mrs L. Simonson and "Miss Hilda Gust ( 0 f Rongotca) and Mrs C. Trenkncr (Wellington'): also eleven grandchildren. The interment, took place at the Rongote*. cemetery on Wednesday and the large number who gathered were an evidence of the esteem and resneot he was held l’n. The service was eondu cted hv Rev. D. C. rah* (Wellington), who in addition to tho scrvice usual on such occasions spoke words of cheer and comfort to the bereaved from from the. Sen’nture, Revelation 1-18: ‘‘l am He that liveth and was dead, and, behold I am alive for evermore.”
