A claim for £4027 3s 6d damages was brought in the Supreme Court by Mrs Lorraine Eva Mary Manning, of Lower Hutt, to-day, in connection with the death of . her husband, who was struck by a falling hatch beam when loading butter into the steamer Durham on March 3. Mr Justice Reed was on the Bench. The widow has one child, born six weeks after her husband’s death. Blie claimed £27 3s 6d special and £4OOO general damages. His Honour said lie had no hesitation in describing the claim as extravagant. It was probably the most extravagant of its kind he had seen in the Courts.

The jury awarded £2250 to the widow and £650 to the child, and the special damages brought the total to £2927 3s Gd.
