QUARTERLY SESSION OPENS,
A LENGTHY CALENDAR
“I am sorry that I am not able to congratulate the district this time on the absence of crime. There are eight indictable cases for trial, and some or them are very unpleasant and serious, but I do not think that any of them will give you any trouble.” This statement was made by riis Honour Mr Justice Ostler at the opening of the quarterly session of the Supreme Court at Palmerston North this morning, during his charge to the Grand Jury. His Honour traversed the cases on the criminal calendar, referring to those alleging certain offences. There was also ail allegation against a woman ot forging and uttering a State Advances Corporation voucher, he said, and of theft of the proceeds. Two further cases were charges of the theft of turkeys. The /men involved had elected to be ‘ tried by tbe Supreme Court instead of in the Magistrate s Court, evidently preferring to give their account of the occurrence to a jury. The last case for trial was a very ■serious one. The Grand Jury were empanelled as follow i—Messrs TV. G. Black (foreman) It. C. Abraham, A. J. Andrews, K. G. Bennett, H. H. Blandford, W. Clegg, It. True hills were returned hv the Grand Jury in the eases of Bertram Ernie Sixtus, alleged indecent assault; Mrs Alice Hughes (formerly of Bunnvthorpe-Kairanga Itoad, and now of Shannon), alleged forgery, uttering and theft; Charles Christensen, alleged indecent assault; Cecil John Warn, John Vincent O’Reilly, Harry Bvers. lan Hamilton Byers, Noel Thomas Hannan, and John James O’Dea, alleged theft of turkeys; Hector James McDonald, alleged indecent assault; Charles Frederick Noil Johnson an alleged serious and Frederick Bowles, alleged indecent asSBU REMAND FOR SENTENCE. Pleas of guilty to four charges of indecent assault at Umutoi were entered by Bertram ltrme S/xtus, a farmer,'aged 50, of Umutoi (for whom Mr G.’ Crossley appeared). His Honour intimated that lie would remand prisoner until Saturday morning for sentence^^^^^^
