Application has been made to the Palmerston North City Council for permission to erect a hoarding on railway property in the vicinity of Coles’s Buiklings, but it wps strongly opposed by Cr J. Hodgens. M.P., at the meeting of the council last evening, when he said the policy of former councils had been very definitely and determinedly in objection to the erection of such hoardings. Cr W. B. Cameron concurred, commenting that if the council had any lights at all in that direction it should exercise them to prevent the locality “becoming one of unsightly hoardings.” It was proposed to refer to matter to the works committee, together with a legal opinion which had been obtained, but the council accepted an amendment moved by Cr Hodgens, and declined the application. Three possible grounds of objection were the danger which would arise in the event of an obstruction of the view of the railway, any unsightly nature of the hoarding, or disapproval of the type of display it carried.

A large flock of shags coursing along the river on Sunday morning attracted considerable attention at Mangatainoka. Later two more flocks numbering a.t least 100 appeared on the scene, whipping the river in a methodical manner. Shags have played havoc with trout in the Ma-ngahao and Alangatainoka Rivers this season.

Adopting a recommendation of the finance committee, the general committee of the Manawatu A. and P. Association to-day empowered the president (Mr J. A. Russell) and the secretary (Mr Hugh Kissling) to make, representations to the Dairy Produce Board with a view to securing financial assistance in regard to the freight and storage of show butter.

On an enquiry being made at tbe monthly meeting of the Palmerston North Hospital Board, yesterday, in regard to the provision of a residence at Shannon for the district nurse stationed there, it was explained that tentative plans for a cottage had been drawn up and, when exhibited to the board, authority was given for them to be submitted to the Health Department for approval.

Exemption from jury service was sought by seven applicants in the Supreme Court to-day. His Honour Mr Justice Ostler refused three of the requests, these being those made by a. dairy factory manager, a nurseryman and a dairy farmer milking five cows. Two dairy farmers milking larger herds, a tailor with four employees on piecework, and a night porter were granted exemption. The announcement that the Government has decided to carry out a survey with the object of providing road access from the Taupo township to Western Bay and Rangatira Point in order to increase the fishing amenities and scenic attractions of the district has been made bv the Minister of Internal Affairs (Hon. W. E. Parry), who has been carrying out an inspection tour in the Rotorua district.—Press Association.

West he engaged to prepare a report on the general condition of the big stand and to prepare plans and an estimate of the cost ot reroofing it,” was a recommendation placed before the general committee of the Manawntu and West Coast A. and P. Association, to-day, from the finance committee. The finance committee also reported that it had been decided to have repairs carried out to the seating in the stand at an approximate cost of £ls.

The serious danger to which motorists are subjected by drifting smoke from fires adjacent to the highways was discussed at length by the executive committee of the Manawatu Automobile Association, last evening, when a remit was drafted for submission to the North Island Motor Union conference that the Government be urged to make it a statutory offence to allow 6moke to drift over a highway in such a manner as to be dangerous to traffic. Rebates on the charges made to two charitable institutions holding space at the National Dairy Show were granted at a meeting of the general committee of the Manawatu A. and P. Association to-day, and the following recommendation, advanced by the finance committee, was confirmed: That in future a ..reduction in space charges to charitable institutions be considered only in cases where the space occupied lias been allocated by the secretary ill a position not keenly sought by other exhibitors.

Surprise was expressed at the monthly meeting of the Palmerston North Hospital Board, yesterday, when it was announced by the chairman (Mr J. A. Nash) that one tender had been received for conducting funerals—from the Funeral Furnishers’ Association. Instead of £1 19s, including mileage, which is the figure of the present agreement (to expire shortly), the tender had been for £7 10s, plus Is a mile where a hearse had to travel beyond the city .boundaries. The board decided to refer the .matter to the Alinister of Health (Hon. P. Fraser) for enquiries to be made of the Department of Industries and Commerce.

The Palmerston North City Council, last evening, passed a formal resolution providing for borrowing on overdraft up to £IO,OOO against the current vear’s revenue. The limit so fixed has been ns high as £15,000, but owing to the buoyancy of the council’s revenue this is not now necessary. It was reSorted by the town clerk (Mr J. R. lardie) that the council at present has a debit ol £SOOO, but through the discount offered for the prompt payment of rates, this would soon be liquidated, and the council would be able to place a substantial amount on fixed deposit after providing for current commitments.

The installation of the wiring at the Otaki Sanatorium to provide radio entertainment for the patients is now completed, half the cost (£BS) of the-installation having been borne by the Rotary Clubs in the Wellington province. The managing-secretary (Mr A. J. Phillipps) informed the Palmerston North Hospital Board yesterday that he wished to have a special gathering held at the Sanatorium to mark the first use of the installation. He hoped to see present the members of the Otaki committee and other members of the board. The board decided to hold the gathering in August.

Proposals that the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association should take advantage ,of the King’s Birthday holiday uext year for the, holding of a special attraction, the funds from which could be applied to such .a purpose as the restoration of the main grandstand to its former condition,- were made at a meeting of the general committee of the association to-day. Even if the Winter Show did not open until one or two days later than usual, the association should take advantage of the holiday, it was urged. The subject was referred to the finance committee for consideration.

“Jury service is a duty that every citizen has to do,” stated His Honour Mr Justice Ostler in the Supreme Court at Palmerston North to-day, when a nurseryman employing 22 hands sought exemption on the ground that none of his assistants knew all the plants sufficiently to execute orders, which required his personal supervision. His Honour commented that the applicant would have to get up early and do his work before he came to court. The juror admitted that he had never been called for service before. “And you might never be again. s'ou have got to do vour duty,” observed His Hnnoii” in granting exemption for one day only.

The following motion, proposed by Mr R. D. Knight and seconded by Mr M. A. Conway, was placed before the monthly meeting of the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association’s general committee, to-day, and is to be considered in due course at the annual meeting: That as a mark of appreciation of the generosity of the late Mr John Balsillie in bequeathing the association £SOO, and of the many years of support accorded the association by him, we recommend the annual meeting to elect his daughter, Mrs B. Wingate, of Longburn, an honorary member of the association,”
