RANGIOTU

(From Our Own Correspondent.) RANGIOTU, July 19.

On the eve of their departure to take up residence at Palmerston North, a farewell social and dance function was tendered to Mr and Mrs J. Shaw and family on Friday evening, when thero was'-a very largo and representative gathering. Mr Shaw, who has been in business as local storekeeper for the past nine years, has associated himsolf with sporting and social activities of the district, and the high esteem entertained towards him and his family was expressed during the evening. Dance music was supplied by a professional orchestra, the dancing being interspersed with items contributed by members of the Palmerston North Business Girls’ Club, capably assisted by other visiting talent-. Mr It. E. Dixon, on behalf of the residents, said Mr and' Mrs Shaw and family, had endeared themselves to all during their residence. He referred to the vory keen interest Mr Shaw had taken in all. matters connected with the welfare and advancement of Rangiotu. For the past 7 years Mr Shaw had been a valued momber of the Rangiotu School Commit tee, for five years of which he held the office of chairman. It was pleasing to see such a record gathering of residents, representing all sections of the community. He thanked the members of the Business Girls’ Club for their assistance and excellent items. Mr M. H. Oram, on bolialf of the Wanganui Education Board, spoke in eulogistic terms of Mr. Shaw’s ungrudging 1 und faithful service in the cause of education. “We know the good work done by inen of Mr Shaw’s calibre, stated the speaker. Mr Oram wished him and his family the best of health. Mr Dixon, on behalf of the residents, [•resented Mr Shaw and family with a valuable silver teapot, dinner waggon, curb, fire screen, and log box, as tokens of thenhigh esteem. Mr Shaw feelingly thanked the residents for their sincerity and the complimentary remarks showered upon them. The greatly appreciated the valuable presents given and would regard them as lasting mementoes from the residents of the district. He thanked Mr Oram for his kindly sentiments, and stated that he had always enjoyed his contact with educational matters as a member of the School Committee, and that had been due to the loyal support he had at all times received from his fellow members and .the residents in general. During the evening items were contributed by the following Recitation, Mrs Dickinson; solo, Mr Spraggon: pianoforte duet, Misses Penketh and King (Palmerston North); solo, Mrs Ilannay (Foxton); sketch, Miss J. Spellman (Palmerston North); solo, Miss Penkc-th. A lucky spot waltz was won by Mr and Mrs E. Russell. , Playing in the Henson ‘knock-out Hup competition on Saturday the local Iluia football team was defeated by Rongoten by the narrow margin of 9 points to 8. Next, Saturday will witness the last of the series of' games for the McKelvie Shield in the Te Kawau Rugby Sub-Union s competition, when Huia will play the final against Oroua Downs on the local grounds. The death occurred early yesterday morning of Mr Tawlnai Erucrn, an erstwhile resident of Rangiotu, at his residence at Foxton. Deceased had been in indifferent health for some considerable time. The late Mr Krucra whs a member of the Te Aute Maori College football team which successfully toured Australia in 1904, and in lalcr years played for the old Huia team until up to the outbreak of the Great War. Ho leaves a widow and a grown up daughtei to mourn his loss.
