DAVIS CUP DOUBLES
INTER-ZONE FINAL. AMERICANS BEAT GERMANS. TERRIFICALLY FAST PLAY. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received July 20, 9.55 a.m. LONDON, July 19. The inter-zone final in the Davis Cup competition, between Germany and America, was played to-day, the Americans winning. It was believed that the result of the tie would eventually depend on this game The play started at top speed. The Americans in the first set Jed 4—2, but the Germans then took four games in a row for the set. The play continued at a terrific speed in the second set, with numerous brilliant short-range rallies. The games went with the service to 3—3, and after Rudge had dropped his service the Germans went ahead to 5—3. The Americans then resorted to lobbing and made untakeable smashes from the returns. This enabled them to win four successive games for the set.
The match in the third set was still fought out with the utmost vigour and determination. The Germans led 4—3, but the Americans took the set after some effective smashing by Mako. The Germans rattled up a 4—l lead in the fourth set, but von Granin) then lost accuracy owing to over-anxiousness. Mako produced many fine services and clever passing drives and Budge, who had not reached his usual heights throughout the remainder of tlie contest, won his service to love, clinching the match with two aces. Doubles.—J. D. Budge and C. G. Mako (U.S.A.) beat G. von Gramm and H. Henkel (Germany) 4—6, 7—5, B—6, 6—4.
In the first singles von Cramm beat Grant and Budge beat Henkel.
