TROTTING NOTES.

MANAWATU CLUB'S TURNOVER. STEADY PROGRESS MADE. (By “Square-Gaiter.”) During the past season the totalizator turnover of the Manawatu Trotting Club was £22.626, compared with £15.238 in the 1935-36 season and £12,643 in the 1934-35 period. This shows the steady progress which it has made since the return of iiz meetings from Ashhuret to Awapuni. A lengthy Spell. Since racing at the Manawatu meeting | in April Electric 801 l has had an easy time and has put on surplus condition. She has not been.over-raced, hut has shown ability at middle distances, which suggests she is likely to further pay her way. Champion Pacer Coming. ! Lawn Derby, the champion Australian 1 poccr, who is reported to be coming to New Zealand to contest important spring events, is ono of tbc best pacers raced in: Australia for some considerable time, and, i although he has reached a tight mark, ha 3 been putting up some outstanding perform- 1 ance-s of late. Ho has taken a record of 2.3 1-5 for a mile, and only recently won a , mile and a-half event at Harold Parkfiom' 72 yards behind, in 3.24, the going on that occasion being slow. Lawn Derby will. probably be a competitor in the next Now . Zealand Trotting Cup, and there is every I chance that his stay will ho prolonged to 1 enable him to compote in the inter-Domin-ion championships early next year.

Auckland's Best Youngster. Sandusky is probably the best two-year-old raced in Auckland for a long time, and bo should have no trouble in holding his own with the better-class horses. He has had only five races to date, and in each of his last four starts has paid a dividend. Tho first effort to attract tho attention of the public was when the black pacer was decidedly unlucky in not finishing closer than third at the Thames fixture. Ho followed this up with an improssivo victory over a mile and a-quartcr at Awapuni, scoring comforlably after being nearly knocked down half a milo from home. His next appearance was at Claudolands, and again tho geiding struck trouble in the running, but was finishing on in fine stylo in second place. His recent form in gaining second place in the Sapling Stakes, after being in trouble tbreo furlongs from homo, is still fresh in the minds of backers, and it may be mentioned that practically every South Island critic is unanimous that Sandusky should have won. Present intentions are to tako tho youngster to Hutt Park next month to concst, the threc-year-old classic. Sandusky is a half-brother to the brilliant pacing mare Bonny Azure, and is by Jewel Pointer from Bonnie Bingen, a mare who has proved an unqualified’ success at, the stud. In Ills races Sandusky has displayed courage of the highest order, and lie gives every indication of developing into a stayer. Axminster for Derby.

Axminstcr, trained at Mangcrc, has shown promise this season. Ho only appeared on tho one <iCcasion, this being in the North Island Challenge Stakos. He was always in tho firing line, and when tackled by Horsepower at tho entrance to the straight the pair had a battle royal, and it. was a treat to watch both youngsters display such fine courage, says a critic. There was only half a head in it at the post, but tile margin was against Axminster. Siiico that effort ho has been enjoying a spell in the paddock, and it is unlikely that ho will race before the Auckland summer meeting. Axminster is the first of tho progeny of Ringtruc to face the starter, and the latter premises to get some fine pacers. Axminstcr is out of Great Eyre, a failure on the raco track but a fine success at the stud. A Useful Pacer.

Dusky Sound registered two very good performance at tho Uamaru Jockey Ciub’s meeting. After giving away 48 yards start in the Oamaru Handicap, of one mile and a-Jialf. lie was beaten by Loyal Pat. lie started at, an outside price, but bis good showing encouraged more solid support in the Waikaura Handicap laid in the day. This race ho won in impressive style. Dusky Sound, who is by. .Happy Voyage from Hector’s Own, is rising four years, and in the hands of R. Townley he may prove a good winner next season. Great Jewel Going South.

The promising young horse Great Jewel may be sent south shortly, and will bo trained at Addington. Great Jewel has more sped than the average improver, and he only needs to go away properly from the barrier to prove a good winner, as there are few better prospects in his class than tile bay son of Jewel Pointer and Harvest Home. Ho will be tho first of tho progeny of Jewel Pointer to race in the south, and a good deal of interest will bo laken in his performances. Increase in Stakes.

■ Stakes totalling £1775, an increase of £375, have been allocated for tho Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting in August. A .feature of tho programme is the fact that there will be no raco with a value, of less than £2OO, and bigger increases are attached to the minor and middle-class events than to the faster races. Progress of Indianapolis.

When scon in bis loosebox recently Indianapolis looked bright and healthy, states a southern writer. TIo has thickened out during his long spell from racing. He lias made a satisfactory recovery from tho indisposition that impaired his stamina in the New Year, and his trainer is very pleased with the horse's condition. Tho cause of the disability that developed several months ago lias been discovered, and is unlikely to recur. Tho champion's feet have also been treated, and are in perfect order to withstand another preparation. Ho has boon exercised every day for the past three months, and will be given judicious speed work with a view to contesting sprint, races at Addington in August. Much in-terest-is being' taken in the horse’s track work, because*, while many of his followers think he will train on to be as good as ever be' has boon, others are diffident about his surviving tho necessary speed trials which lie must do to fit him for tho big tasks which ho has before him. At the Stud.

Prince Pointer, one of Logan Pointer’s host sons, is still at the service of breeders in Tasmania. His average of winners L particularly high, ad so far only one of his Tasmanian progeny has failed to score. In New Zealand the Logan Pointer horse did duty, and one of his descendants, Waipalii, promises to develop into a highclass racehorse. Waipahi has a record of 2.43 4-5 for a mile and a-quaner in caddie, and like his sire is a fine pacer. The pedigree of Princess Sherwood, the dam of Prince Pointer, represents a combination cf the most successful blood the Dominion has known, that of Wildwood, Prince Imperial, and Rothschild.
