CLAIM FOR OVERTIME.
SETTLEMENT REACHED. It was announced in the Magistrate’s Court at Palmerston North, yesterday, that a settlement had been reached in the claim of E. C. Gaisford, motor driver, of Palmerston North (Mr H. R. Cooper) against Messrs Currie Bros., carriers, of Ashhurst (Mr A. M. Ongley) in a claim for moneys allegedly due for overtime worked, amounting to £99 8s 9d. The evidence in the case was heard on March 16.
When the case was resumed yesterday, Mr Cooper informed Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., that a settlement had been reached and he asked for an adjournment sine die to enable the settlement to be drawn up.
“This is a ease which should be settled out of Court,” commented Mr Stout, who added that the evidence heard had satisfied him there was a good deal of overtime worked. Mr G. Brown, Inspector of Labour, said that, as Currie Bros, pleaded guilty to two charges preferred against them regarding the keeping of a wages and time book, he did not wish, in view of the settlement reached between Gaisford and defendants, to ask for a penalty. He merely wished the Court to record a conviction on each charge. This was done, with 10s costs on each charge.
