BULLS, April 9.

ri Af tho monthly meeting of the Bulls 1 °wn Board Air J. E. Walker wfl9 in tho chair, and there were present: Messrs A. W. Anion, J. J. Mansell, F. A. Holland, C. 11. Edwards, C. C. Price and D. ! Lundy. The foreman (Air S. Howard) reported on work done for the month. Levin-Grcatford deviation: The Foxton Chamber of Commerce invited the board to send prorescnlativos to a conference to be held in Foxton, and the chairman and i Mr Anion were appointed to attend. Mr ; C. B. Anderson, lion, secretary of the BullsOliakca Sports Chib, wrote thanking the hoard and the foreman for keeping the | Sports Ground in excellent order. The chairman remarked that it was very pleasing to have the hoard’s work appreciated. Health Inspector’s report: Inspector Steele reported oir work done in the town board area for the year ending March 31, 1937. Tho chairman reported that Air Anion and lie had attended a meeting of delegates from local bodies in Alarton, and detailed the business of the mooting. ' Coronation festivities: A communication was received from the Prime Minister, asking the board to call a public meeting to consider wliat form the celebrations should take. A meeting will be called and tho board voted £lO to the fund. Iliffe range: Air Anion stated that tho old metal pit was considered unsuitable for a miniature range, and that tho Rillo Club had another site under consideration. Transfers of property wore approved as follow:—Front G. V. Jackson to C. C. Price, and from C. C. Price to A, IT. Burt. An application to make alterations to the Criterion Hotel building was grafted. Finance: The month’s receipts were as follow: Rents, £l3 15s: rates, £3O 9s 8d; heavy traffic fees, £3l 16s 9d: petrol pump rents, £ll 2s 6d; cemetery, £7 15s; library (rent), £2; subscriptions, £3 Os 6d; Domain, 18s: total, £IOO 17s sd. Accounts were passed for payment. The chairman gave notice to move at, next meeting of the board that the following rates he struck for the present year: —Hospital rate, 4d : general rate, Is 3d: lighting rate, 6d; bridge rate, 2d: foolpatli rate, Id. The clerk’s estimate of receipts and expenditure for the year was approved. Caretaker's salary: Owing to the higher eost of living and the extra amount of work entailed, tho caretaker of the Town Hall was granted an increase to £5 per month, with £1 for sanitary services. Commissioner Anion reported that the mangolds planted on the Domain wore doing well, and would be ready for disposal about the middle of next mouth. The works committee for the ensuing month is: Messrs Anion, Edwards, and Holland.

Afr 11. A r . Bond presided over an attendance of over 40 members at the annual meeting of tho Bulls R.S.A. The report and balance-sheet were adopted, the report stating, inter alia: “The executive views with satisfaction the evident improvement in ihe general economic condition of the returned soldier and his association, this condition being reflected in the general accounts and tlic branch’s finances. It is with some concern, however, that it views I lie general decline in health of some of the returned men. and although the call for assistance has been lighter during the past. year, it is felt with no uncertainty that the interest and support now exercised by members and supporters must, not he relaxed for fear of urgent and heavy calls which may come in the future. Wo trust, however, that this will not he necessary. The membership exceeds all previous years, 1 lie financial members numbering 76. Afr F. ,T r - Watson was elected to the vacancy in ihe life membership caused by the death of Air J. F. AlcKclvio. Poppy Day showed a net profit of £2O 12s sd, as

against £8 Os 5d the previous year, and thanks arc due to Mrs Sutherland and the ladies who worked so well. The annual ball showed a net profit of £46 7s. The call for monetary assistance during the year diminished to £7 5s 3d, and returned men tramping through the district were provided with a night’s lodging and a I meal. It is fitting to extend the thanks I of the branch to the ladies of the district [ for what they have done. It is with regret that we record the departure of two valued members, Messrs \V. A. Churchill (past-president) and 0. 11. Grut (our lion. 1 treasurer). It is suggested that a function should he held to mark the 21st birthday i of the N.Z.H.S.A., and this matter is rc-} commended to the incoming executive for, consideration. Thanks are due to the vari-1 oils officers; to the general public, for their support; to the ladies, and the Press.” The i election of officers resulted:—Patron,! Oolonel C. G. Richardson ' (Sanson), A. M. Trench (Rongotea), E. j R. Gemmill (Makowhai). M. D. Anderson i (Parcwanui), .T. A. Kcllv (Turakina), and j R. .T. Gray (Brandon Hall Road). Votes of thanks were accorded the retiring coin-! mil tee men. (Messrs IT. O. Clark and F. I Ellen - . Mr C. 11. Edwards was re electcu f bon. pianist: Mr S. Rich, lion, secretary; Mr T. T. Webster, lion, treasurer: and Mr R. Mackay, hon. auditor. Fifteen new, members were elected. After supper, musical items wore rendered by Messrs G. Richardson, V. Edwards, A. IT. Burt, and others.

Parents of pupils attending secondary schools in Palmerston North met Mr N. T. Lambourn, Director of Education, at Bulls on Thursday. Air C. L. Ilunlcr, M.P., introducing the deputation. Mr N. Amos said that there were 20 boys and girls from this district travelling to Palmerston North and back daily, and the time of the service was not satisfactory. In addition. some 12 were picked up from Ohakca and Sanson. Mr Lambourn gave the deputation a sympathetic hearing, and promised to go fully into the matter on hie return
