HEALTH. (By Aliss Alary Tallis.) The road to winter health.—Be sure of plenty of fresh air when you are asleep. Only sleep with your windows closed when the doctor orders it, which lie will only (7a in the case of exceptional illness-. That doesn’t say wo should keep our windows wide open, so that our dreams are tempered by a frozen nose. But we have to consider the fact that our lungs breathe deeper when we sleep and need fresh air more than ever then. So let the weather decide how wide open .your window may he. but he sure that it’s a fair crack at least.

In the morning, get out of your room as quickly as possible and bathe and dress where it’s warm, returning to your airy room for your daily dozen only. But if you’re bound to .your room for morning ablutions, hop out of* bed a half-hour before you intend to dress and switch the fire on. Then the room will he warm when you come in to do your morning routine in it. There’s a saying that a man’s love outlives his wife’s serious illnesses, blit not her regular colds! So here’s a simple remedy- which helps if the cold li a/m’t .yet arrived. As soon as you feel it coming, drink a glass of water with one drop of iodine in it. But this only- helps if you c-ateh your cold before it has really caught you. If you have a tendency- towards tonsilitis, take the precaution of gargling before leave the house oil cold days. Use about ,‘3 tablespoonsful peroxide to a glass of warm water. COOKING.

Autumn and AVinter Salads.—Hero are some new ideas for salads which uro both delicious and inexpensive. Raw Y egeable Salad: Carrot, celery, turnip, beetroot, red cabbage and cauliflower all make refreshing salad, “ they are finely shredded or grated. Choose sound, fresh vegetables, and wash them carefully. They may be diessed with olive oil and a dash of lemon, light mayonnaise, or whipped cream with salt, lemon and red pepper. Add a piquant flavour by sprinkJing one salad with chopped parsley, another with minced chives, marjoram, mint, and so on. If these are unobtainable, a whisk of powdered dried herbs can he stirred into the dressing, flry thyme, dill, tarragon, or basil. Arrange the different salads in hors d oeuvres dishes or piled separately oil a large dish. Celery, Tomato and

Pineapple: Equal quantities of chopped celery and sliced tomatoes with a third of cubed pineapple. Dress with mayonnaise to which a spoonful of cream and a pinch of powdered ginger lias been added. Try using diced apple and fresh-shelled walnuts instead of the pineapple. Piquant Carrot Salad: AV ash, dry and grate )Jb of carrots, add 2 tablespoonsful ol granted horseradish. Stir in the juice ol .1 a lemon, 13 tablespoonsful of oil and a wineglassful of sour cream. Chicory Salad: Crisp white chicorystalks are cut fine and mixed with a yolk of egg which has been whisked with oil and lemon. Add a handful of

roasted peanuts, or a sprinkling of grated cheese. Red Cabbage, Cream and Ginger : Cut out the coarse stalks of the cabbage and shred it finely. It may- be softened, if preferred, bypouring boiling water over it, and then draining it carefully. Make a dressing of egg-yolk, sour cream, lemon juice, salt and ginger. BEAUTY.

The Beauty of Your Eyes.—ln applying face powder, don’t powder tne ■eyelids at all. Keep the powder well outside the area of the eye-socket, so that the akin of the upper and lower lids, and even beyond, is left moist and slightly darker than your powdered cheeks. This makes your eyes look bigger, and also avoids emphasising any fine lines around them. A tiny dab of oil or cream on your upper lids makes them look moist and transparent and very youthful. This also makes eyeshadow blend smoothly. Use eyeshadow only on the upper lids. Touch j it on the lid just above the iris of your eye, then blend it out and up towards the brows and temples. If your upper lids bulge, use a darkish eyeshadow to tone them down so that the bulge is less prominent. Eye-shadow should always be used with a light hand, for the effect should be to make your lids look transparent, as though this were the colour of your eyes showing through fragile, creamy lids. AVhm you are choosing eye-shadow, match it as closely as possible to the colour of your eyes, because they are the keycolour to your whole make up. One well-known firm has a complete makeup of face powder, rouge, lipstick, eyeshadow and mascara, specially keyed to suit every colour of the eyes. You can make your eyes look far apart by applying eye-shadow and mascara onlyon the outer half of the lids and lashes, outside the iris, and by touching the tiniest dot of rouge at tlie inner corner of each eye.

Brush on mascara from the roots of the lashes outwards to the tips, curling the lashes back ns you brush, to give your eyes the effect of being wide open. HTNTS. AA’hen opening bottles of home-made hop or ginger beer, hold the bottle over a wide-mouthed jar or jug. and empty it into the jug, then transfer to the glasses a.nd avoid waste. Go over the kitchen paint-work with a flannel soaked in raw linseed oil. This removes grease and freshens up the oainc, and if done occasionally saves a ot of repainting. A good cooling drink for a child or an invalid is made from an apple. Bake a tart apple well and mash it with a pint of boiling water. Beat well, cool and strain. Add sugar.
