SURF RESCUES

BATHERS AT PIHA. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND. March 29. When they were carried more than 200 yards out to sea from the Pilia Beach bv a strong tidal set at about 4 o’clock this afternoon two men and two young women had narrow escapes from drowning. Only prompt action on the part of members of the Pilia Surf Life-Saving Club averted a tragedy, all four persons being rescued with considerable difficulty after being about half an hour in the water. The two men, Mr B. Gilmore, senr., of Newmarket, and Mr J. McGregor, of Mount Eden, were little the worse for their ordeal, hut it was almost an hour and a-lialf before the two girls, one of whom was a daughter of Mr Gilmore, recovered completely.
