HALCOMBE
(From Our Own Correspondent.) HALCOMBE, Jan. 31. At the January meeting of the Halcombe branch of the Young Farmers’ Club Mr J. Hamilton presided. The secretary read a letter from the Woodvillo Show committee inviting tho members of the club to participate in a special sheep judging competition. It was resolved to endeavour to secure some entries. The organising secretary of the Young Farmers’ Club wroto drawing attention to tho need for demonstrations of stacking, there being very few young men capable of building a stack. The matter is to be left until the busy period is over. The speaker for the evening was Mr W. S. Page, whoso subject was “Conducting a Meeting.” Mr Page dealt with the routine of properly conducted meetings, answering questions and elaborating his subject in a manner which must have proved very helpful to tho members. At the conclusion of his address Mr Pago was warmly applauded following which a general discussion on the stock embargo took place. The procession and sports sub-commit-tee of the jubilee committee met on Thursday evening to draw up plans for tho coming celebrations. A discussion on the various units of the procession was held, and sub-committees were set up to arrange for entries. The following is to be the order of the procession, tho responsible committees being shown in parentheses:—Feilding Pipo Band, Halcombe Band, ex-teachers, ex-pupils, present teachers and pupils, hand-propelled vehicles, decorated bicycles (Messrs B. and M. Wischnowsky); bullock team (Messrs W. S. Pago and N. Adam); horse-drawn vehicles (Messrs S. Anderson, G. Burgess and H. Fergusson); ridden horses, motor vehicles (Messrs J. Anderson, G. Buchanan, R. J. Managh, and D. C. Managh). One lorry is to exhibit samples of local industry. Messrs W. S. Page and N. Adam are to en-
deavour to securo Maori entertainers. Prizes will bo given for the following sections: Drawn vehicles, motor vehicles, bicycles, etc., and pedestrians. Judges for these competitions will bo appointed from tho visitors, the chairman and secretary to arrange for them. It was decided that banners indicating the decades of attendance be carried by tho ex-pupils, Messrs S. Anderson and G. Burgess to prepare the banners. Messrs E. W. Cowdrey and M. C. Amadio were appointed chief marshals for tho procession, which is to proceed from tho school to the township, circle the monument, anti finish by circling the Recreation Ground, whore tho sports will be held. A sports programme is to bo arranged by Messrs W. S. Page, G. Burgess and M. C. Amadio, to be submitted to a later meeting of the committee. Tho Guy Cup tennis competition commenced on Saturday when a wind of gale force mado conditions very unpleasant. The Boaconsficld A team played at Halcombe and put up a fine performance in winning every set, tho score being 16 sets to love. The games scoro was 96 to 46. The home players seemed quite unable to handle the wind, while tho visitors rose superior to the conditions. At the conclusion of the games tho club captain (Mr M. C. Amadio) congratulated tho visitors on their meritorious performance. Ho hoped that when the return match was played Halcombe would he able to offer stronger resistance. Mr G. Coggin replied, thanking the home team for a pleasant day's outing. The detuiled results were as follow, Beaeonsfield players being mentioned first:—Men’s doubles: G. Coggin and E. Buchanan beat M. Wilson, 6—o; Miss B. Entwistle and Miss K. Buchanan beat Mrs M. C. Amadio and Miss M. Clapham, 6 —4. Mixed doubles: Mr and Mrs J. Stewart beat M. C. Amadio and Mrs R. J. Managh, 6—l; E. Buchanan and Miss M. McLean beat. L. Davies and Mies V. Wilson, 6 —3; G. Coggin and Miss B. Entwistle beat D. C. Managh and Mrs Amadio, 6 —2; 11. Buchanan and Miss C. Buchanan beat C. C. Bleakloy and Miss M. Clapham, 6 —5. Men’s singles: Stewart beat Amadio, 6—4; E. Buchanan beat Davies, 6—4; Coggin beat Managh, 6—4; H. Buchanan heat Bleakley, 6—4. Women’s singles: Miss McLean beat Mre Managh, 6 —l; Mre Stewart beat Miss Wilson, 6—l; Miss Entwistlo beat Mrs Amadio, 6—3; Miss Buchanan beat Miss Clapham, 6—4. Tho Halcombe B team, which visited Beaconafield, put up a good performance in beating tho home team by 10 sets to 2. Miss Mavis Anderson, who has been spending an extended holiday in the Auckland district, has returned home. Miss C. M. Rowland, who has been on the 6taff of tho Tokorangi School for over two years, has accepted a position in Auckland. Miss Rowland will commence her new duties when tho schools reopen. Residents and school children of Halcombe will be very sorry to learn of the death, in the Wellington Hospital, ol Miss Gladys Jame 6, until recently a teacher on tho Halcombe School staff. Miss James, while in Halcombe, endeared herself to children and parents alike, and earned the respect of all by the patient manner in which she bore her continued ill-health. All will join in extending sympathy to relatives.
