TIES OF EMPIRE

STATE LUNCHEON HELD. 'NOTED VISITORS AS GUESTS. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Feb. 2. A number of distinguished visitors to New Zealand were guests of the Government at a State luncheon at Parliament Buildings to-day, over which the Prime Minister (Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) presided. The guests were Captain the Rt. Hon. Sir Basil Brooke, C.8.E., M.C., M.P., Minister of Agriculture in Northern Ireland, and Lady Brooke, Senator the Hon. A. J. McLachlan, Postmaster-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, and Mrs McLachlan, and Hon. H. J. T. Hyland, M.L.A., Assistant Minister of Agriculture, Victoria. In extending a welcome to the visitors, the Prime Minister mentioned the ties of kinship and tradition that

bound the Empire countries together and the value of meeting people face to face. He referred to the coming Imperial Conference. He said that all their interests were common, their objectives much the same, and when they got together around the conference table he was optimistic enough to think that they would aim for even' bigger things and accomplish more than was ever accomplished in the history of the British Empire.

In reply, Sir Basil Brooke said that there was no difference between any Britisher in any part of the Empire. They were all influenced by a feeling that in democracy they were fostering the most useinl creation in any Empire. It was the greatest influence tor peace. It was only by getting to know one another, by expressing opinions and creeds, that they could help one of the Empire’s most glorious achievements.

Senator McLachlan and Mr Hyland added appreciation of the courtesy extended to them.
