BRITISH NAVY.
RETENTION OF CRUISERS. LONDON, Dec. 18. The cruisers to be retained in servioe are Cardiff, Ceres, Caledon. Calypso, and Caradoc. All were completed in 1917. AMERICAN COMMENT.
NO OBJECTION BAISED.
WASHINGTON, Dec. 17,
Britain’s decision to retain five overage cruisers was not a surprise and occasioned no objection. Satisfaction is expressed that Britain acted in strict accordance with, the terms of the escalator clause in the Naval Treaty. The United States. is without over-age cruisers and a similar step is impossible. The Washington correspondent of the New York Herald-Tribune says it is reported that the United States will keep 19,000 tons of extra destroyer strength by the transfer of cruiser class permitted under Article 17 of the Treaty, which gives the United States 209,000 tons of destroyers at the expiration of the treaty compared with Britain’s 190,000. ,
