GOLF

PROVINCIAL TITLE. TOURNEY AT lIOKOWHITU. Meeting a high-class field, which included several former New Zealand amateur golf champions, W. Davidge. of Shandon, Wellington, who finished with an aggregate of 145, won, at the Hokowhitu Jinks during the week-end, the 36-hole stroke competition for the champion of champions challenge shield. The New Zealand amateur champion, J. P. Hornabrook, who holds the title, did not defend it. The tournament was open to champions and ex-champions of the affiliated golf clubs of the Wellington and Hawke’s Bay districts. Three strokes behind the winner, M. Moore (Miramar) filled second place. With a brilliant afternoon round of 68 he equalled A. J. Shaw’s course record.

Third place went to B. M. Silk, who was followed by A. D. S. Duncan and J. L. Blaelf, equal, in fourth place. Besides tile championship, a 36-hole stroke handicap was conducted, trophies being allocated for the best gross score over 18 holes, and the best net scores. Davidge won the championship, the 36-hole stroke handicap and the first of the 18-hole stroke handicaps. Moore predominated in the afternoon with a gross of 68. He had improved by 12 strokes on his morning round. The Manawatu Club’s course was in perfect order and the conditions, except for light rain which, however, made for more accurate play near the greens, could not have been improved upon. The fixture was very efficiently conducted by the Manawatu Golf Club and its officials. Praising the course, Davidge stated that the fairways were better than any others lie had played on, and that the condition of the course generally and the club’s appointments were all that could be desired.

The opinion was expressed by Moore, who equalled the course record, that the Hokowhitu links were the best he had played on anywhere during the year. The greens were splendid and the alterations recently carried out, especially at the first hole, were a big improvement. “I have never seen Hokowhitu in better order. The improvements carried out this year are excellent.” commented A D. S. Duncan. THE PLAY.
