WAR HINDERED
3.15 P.M. EDITION
REBELS’ POSITION WORSE. TRENDS IN MADRID. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received November 28. 1.45 p.m. LONDON, Nov. 27. The chief obstacle to a rebel encirclement of Outer Madrid, apart from the Loyalist counter-attacks in the Talavera district, is the dogged tenacity of Colonel Mangada, who is holding the Escorial and threatening the left flank of any rebel advance west and north-west of the capital. His overthrow must precede any effective insurgent demonstration, for which the rebels are concentrating all their available forces, including a complete motorised division, whose arrival is eagerly anticipated. Meanwhile, the activities in the Madrid arena have resolved themselves into an artillery combat in wintry conditions, which have necessitated the supply of blankets and rubber boots to the troops. The overcast day gave further respite to Madrid from air raids. The insurgents on the whole, though their position is not as desperate as is depicted by their opponents, are in a worse situation tha.n a fortnight ago. The Spanish Embassy in Parts announces the execution by Segovian rebels of Francisco Largo Valvo the 22-year-old eon of I.iargo Caballero, which is stigmatised as an unjustifiable reprisal. CARRIAGE OF ARMS. THE BRITISH BAN. Received November 28, 9.50 a.m. LONDON, Nov. 27. The British Bill to prohibit the carriage of arms to Spain disallows transhipment on the high seas. It empowers the authorities to search and detain suspected ships in home ports.
