BOXING DAY HOLIDAY.
EFFECT OF LEGISLATION. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Nov. 26. This year Boxing Day falls on a Saturday, and those employees who are working under a five-day week will not benefit from the statutory provision which stipulates that Boxing Day shall be regarded as a general holiday. When statutory holidays occur on a Sunday they are generally observed on the following Monday. This is the case, for example, in the conditions governing the employment of shop assistants, but there is no provision for the transfer of a statutory holiday from Saturday except in the Butchers’ Award, which provides that if their half-holiday falls' on a statutory holiday they must be given the extra halfholiday in either the preceding or the subsequent week.
