ORANGES IN DEMAND.
AN ACUTE SHORTAGE. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Nov. 25. Not for years has there been such an acute shortage of oranges in Wellington. For the past few weeks the supplies have been abnormally low, and the 800 cases which were auctioned yesterday realised phenomenal prices and cannot be retailed at a reasonable profit under 4d to 5d each. The prices yesterday ranged from 54s to 68s a case of 21 dozen. At this time of the year large quantities come from California, but the maritime strike lias held up the usual shipments and the West Indies are now the main source of supply. As far as can be gathered, only one consignment is due before Christmas.
