PAHIATUA.

PAHIATUA, Nov. 20. Several members of the Loyal Mangatainoka Lodge on Thursday evening paid a fraternal visit to the Loyal Dannevirke Lodge. Mr R. A. Williams, of Mangatainoka, who has been associated with amateur athletics in the Wairarapafor the past 40 years was elected a life member of the Wairarapa Sub-Centre at its annual meeting. Judging of the calf competition took place at Konini School on Thursday afternoon. Mr T. H. Verry acted a 6 judge, anrd Messrs W. McClenaghan and F. Ridder represented the Calf Club. Mr F. C. Brockett was also in attendance. The following children led round their calves, which they had fed and handled since birth: Joyce Jensen, Mie Miller, Jimmy Ridder, Jack and Bob McClenaghan. The three calves chosen for dairy type and for dairy condition were those of Joyce Jensen, Jack McClenaghan and James Ridder. These three calves will be taken to Pahiatua for the final judging next month. Mr A. P. Jensen moved a vote of thanks to Mr Verry for his interest in the movement and the latter was given a round of cheers by the children. , Yesterday afternoon, the Mayor, Mr J D. Wilson (representing the loca Justices of the Peace) and the local police officers paid a surprise visit to Mr A. F. O. Clarke, who is leaving for Timaru on transfer, at the Courthouse. On behalf of the assemblv Mr ft. T. Adams called on Mr Clarke to accept a handsome suitcase as a small token of esteem. In doing so he said in case Mr Clarke was likely to forget bis association with Pahiatua it would serve to remind him of the friends he had left behind, Mr Adams then extended best wishes to Mr and Mrs Clarke and hoped they would have happiness and enjoy prosperity in their new home. On behalf of the Justices, Mr Wilson expressed regret that Mr Clarke was leaving and pointed out that ho had been most helpful to them. Constable N. A. Trussing, as officer in charge of the Pahiatua' Police fetation referred to the happy relationship that’had existed between the two departments a lid thanked Mr Clarke tor his co-operation.
