FORTY-HOUR WEEK.

CITY COUNCIL’S POSITION. It was reported to the meeting of the Palmerston North ' City Council, last evening, that the Wellington Labourers’ and General Workers’ Union had advised that a 40-hour week shall be worked from Monday to Friday inclusive and tht any work on Saturday shall he paid for at overtime rates, and offering to discuss with the council the matter of making a general agreement covering outside employees. The city engineer reported that lie had made inquiries from the local Labour Department and he verified the statement regarding the 40-hour week. It was decided that the matter be referred to the Municipal Association with a request for advice as to the position between members of the union and the Wellington City Council, and whether the association would advise the Palmerston North Council to execute a similar agreement with its employees.
