On Saturday afternoon the Paremata bridge, giving shorter access to the favourite seaside resort of Plimmerton, was officially opened by the Minister of Public Works (Hon. R. Semple) who, after cutting the tape, with members of the official party, marched across the bridge. The chairman of the Hutt County Council, Mr D. R. Hoggard, who presided, said that as far as he had been able to ascertain the bridge was first suggested Hi 1907. The council’s minutes of Juno 11 that year disclosed that Mr J. Walker had written offering to donate £6OO for the construction of a road and bridge to connect Paremata and Plimmerton, and that it was resolved that Mr Walker and the Messrs Wall be informed that the estimated cost of the bridge was £3085, and that if the Government subsidy granted amounted to £1440, and the Plimmerton Road Board subscribed £SOO, Mr Walker £SOO, and other private subscribers £40O ; the Hutt Comity Council would subscribe tho balance of the estimated cost. After summarising the history of the negotiations leading to the building of the bridge, Mr Semple referred to the courage and determination of those who were responsible for the attainment of the objective, mentioning specially Mr AV. F. Field, Mr Button, Mr C. J. McKenzie, and Mr Templeton.
