GOLD ROD BEATEN.

FAILS IN A.J.C. DERBY. MALA’S GREAT EFFORT. SYDNEY, Oct. 4. The Australian Jockey Club’s spring mooting opened at Randwick on Saturday in warm weather. The attendance was 70,000. The track was in excellent condition. Gold Rod, who was considered to hold a mortgage on the Derby, failed to stay the distance. The race commenced sensationally. Several horses collided at the barrier-rise, and momentarily a grave smash appeared .imminent when Shakespeare fell, but the rest of the field raced away unharmed. Talking wits the early pacemaker, from Gold Rod and Mala. Passing the mile post Gold Rod ran to the front, with Mala in close attendance, and they continued running in that order until tlie turn, where Mala supplanted Gold Rod. Mala appeared likely to go on to victory, but Talking, finishing with rare determination, worried the New Eealand colt out of the prize. EPSOM INCIDENTS. The Epsom Handicap was marred by an unsatisfactory start, and later by interference in the straight, which cost the winner, Gay Lover, the race, which was awarded to Capris after a protest. Spcarmota raced away in tho lead at the barrier-rise from Black Laughter, Gay Lover, and Capris. Turning for home Gay Rover, Rlack Laughter and Capris were prominent. Tho latter’ took charge at tho distance, ,but was immediately challenged by Gay Lover. In a desperate finish Gay Lover passed the post with a head advantage, but lost, the race because of interference in tho straight. SILVER RING BRILLIANT. Silver Ring gave a splendid exhibition of iiis galloping ability in the Spring Stakes. Running in third position throughout, lie took charge a furlong from home and won by a length, a performance which greatly pleased his Metropolitan Handicap admirers. Sporting Blood also enhanced his Metropolitan prospects, finishing with great dash to secure third prizo. Results: — FIRST HURDLE RACE, of £2OO. About two miles.
