FOUR PROSECUTIONS. PENALTIES IMPOSED. Four prosecutions against owners for permitting stock to be at large on roads in the Kairanga County were brought before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at Palmerston North to-day. Hector Harris, of Linton, pleaded not guilty to a charge of permitting a heifer to stray on the Fitzherbert main road. The ranger (Mr 1. Baldwin) stated that he saw two heifers on the road. One was crippled through having been struck by a car and had to be destroyed. The other went through a bole in the fence into defendant’s property. Defendant, when interviewed. admitted that the second heifer was bis There had been complaints for a fortnight of a black and white heil'er straying on to the road. Mr L. C. Pickering, engineer for the Kairanga County Council, gave evidence that lie saw defendant setting his dog on to the heifer on one occasion. Cyril Martin Croucber, of Tiakitahuna, who was stated to be a first offender, was fined £l, with 12s costs, on, a charge of permitting 25 cows to stray on Foxton Line. Richard Greatorex, of Linton, was fined 10s, with 10s costs, on a charge of allowing 16 cows to stray on Hewitt’s Road. Defendant stated that the animals were half a mile off the main road, and it was the first time in 22 years that be had had stock on the road. Stated by the ranger (Mr I. Baldwin) to have been repeatedly warned, Mrs Ruby Agnes Igglesden was fined 10s, with 12s costs, on a charge of permitting 13 cows to wander on Jackeytown Road.
