(From Our Own Correspondent.) AORANGI, Sept. 33. Outstanding success attended tlie local Ping-Pong Club’s wind-up function. The large and widely representative gathering included visitors irom Bulls, Aehhurst, W’aituna, Parewanui, Alakino, Palmerston North, Foilding, Wellington, To Arakura, Awaituri, and Bunnythorpo to play in the tournament and enjoy the dance. Keen competition was manliest in the handicap tournament, Air D. Durie being the iiandtcuppcr and manager. In tho ladies’ section Aitss J. AI. Cheetham, scratch (Aorungi), was successful in heating Aliss N. Price (4) for the first prize; Air R. L. Tail, scratch (Aorangt), annexed tlie men’s first prize, a silver cup donated by Air D. Dune, with Air J. i/ask, scratch (Feilding), runner-up. Some very excellent games were witnessed and a high standard of play was maintained and tlie dancing programme of both modern and . old-time numbers, interspersed with numerous novelty dances, was thoroughly enjoyed. The winners of tho novelty dances were:—Lucky spot fox trot, Aliss V. Jarrott and Air W. Stevenson; lucky Cay Cordons, Airs E. .McFarland and Air it. L. Tait; mystery train oneistep, Aliss G. Esau and Air C. Campbell; AI onto Carlo waltz, Aliss X*. McFarland and Air W. Stevenson; leap year lucky spot voietta, Alim L. Tremowan and Air B. King. Air D. Durie was Ai.C., and Air G. Dicic contributed an extra. Competitions were won by Aicssrs Gardiner (i'oilding) and T. Carter (Aoratigi). The supper arrangements were in tho hands of Alesilaines J. AI. Durie and R. R. ’fait, who had tlte assistance of members of the club. On behalf of the club Air J. AI. Durie (patron) took the opportunity to thank all who had participated in making the evening such a success, particularly thanking those present for patronising the function in such large numbers. In presenting the prizes to tho successful ping-pong players Air Durie heartily congratulated them on their win, adding that, although lie always liked to see outsiders successful, he felt particularly pleased to sec that both first prizes had been won by local players, and lie felt it reflected great credit on tlie club. In presenting the silver buttons which had boon presented for competition throughout tlie season to the winners, Aicssrs D. Durie and N. Cheetham respectively, Air Durie paid a tribute to tlie late Air U. Fitzgerald, who at tlie time of his death was president, and who had held a responsible office and rendered invaluable assistance to tlie club ever since its inception, adding that one of the buttons had been donated by Air Fitzgerald, whose desire was to improve tlie standard of play anti encourage young members, flic proof that tin's had been accomplished, Mr Durie said, was in tho success achieved by the club during tho season. A surprise presentation was made when Air Harold Cocker, on behalf of flic members of the club, called upon Aliss JClicethain to accept a _ pair of beautiful copper vases, in recognition of her many services to tlie club, adding that tho members had felt they could not let the opportunity pass without some recognition of her work. Aliss G. Esau colled upon Air D. Dune to accept a handsome leather from flic members as a token of their appreciation of his untiring efforts. In a happy' little speech Air Durie thanked the members on behalf of AJiss Cheetham and himself for tlie delightful and useful gifts, adding that anything they had done had always been a pleasure.
