(From Our' Own Correspondent.) SANSON, Sept. 29. Arbor Day was celebrated at the school on Friday afternoon, when there was a good attendance of parents. Mr I'. ,fe. Collier, chairman of the School Committee, extended a welcome to the visitors and introduced Miss M. Duggan, the relieving teacher. Mr Collier delivered a suitabte. address to the children on the ideals of Arbor Day. The chairman then called upon Mr E. J. Bowater, a former chairmanc, to plant the first tree, which was christened the “Ted Bowater” tree. Mr Bowater thanked the chairman and committco for tho courtesy extended to the parents to be present, and for the privilege given him. 110 urged the children to take a keen interest in their trees and olfered a prize for tho girl and boy who gave the most attention to their tree during tho next year. Afternoon tea was served on tho lawn by the teachers, Misses Beattie and Duggan, and the children, after which Mr Collier thanked the parents for attending. Miss Beattie, the head-teacher, returned thanks to tho parents for their interest and tho committee’s work. Favourable reference was made to the general appearance of the school grounds, which reflect credit on tho teachers and tho children. . A general meeting of tno Basketball Club was hold yesterday afternoon to arrange preliminary details in connection with tho club’s ball. In view of the fact that several dances are to take place in tho near future, and owing to tho lateness of the season, it war decided to approach tho Miniature Rifle Club and ask if it will agree to making its dance a combined one. Misses Joyce Davey and L. Lumsdcn and Mr E. J. Bowater were appointed deputation to wait on the Rifle Club. On Monday evening a team from tho recently formed Cribbago Club journeyed to Stanway and played a challenge match. The result was: Stanway 36 son 34. During supper, Mr D. J. Roster congratulated the Stanway Club on their win and thanked them for the enjoyable evening. The Sanson Miniature Riflo Club fired a match against tho Bulls Club for tho McKclvio Cup. In a high scoring match Bulls were successful in retaining tho cup by a margin of five points. On tho first range Bulls headed Sanson by four points and when the last two men went down interest ran high. Tho Bulls pair dropped only two points, while ono of tho Sanson men secured a possible, but tho other dropped five. Bulls thus emerged the winners by 1095 points' to 1090. Pearce, 68—68—136; W. Jenkins, 68— 65—135; A. Stevenson, 66—67—133; total, 1090. The Sanson Table Tennis Club arc to wind up a successful season on Friday, October 2, with their third annual dance. A strong committee, with the assistance of Gedsbn’s Famous Five and an exhibition of the Cuban rumba by Mr Allan and partner, of Palmerston North, hopo to eclipse all their previous functions.
