LA MERI IN SYDNEY.
IMPRESSIONS OF MAORIS. “The Maoris could not bear the ridicule of tourists who cannot understand and appreciate their : original dances,” said La Meri, the dancer, when she arrived in Sydney from New Zealand on September 21. “Therefore, they put on dances which are entertaining and which the tourist expects to see. .Much of the original music is already forgotten and I was sorry to find that for their poi dance, which was originally a rhythmic game and exercise, they have adopted some well-known German and American music.”
